Episode “Master Cleanse”

Nicole: If you have ever fasted or heard about fasting you will know it takes great discipline. Fasting is a common Buddhist custom. Practiced to cleanse the body and will self discipline. It is an exercise in mind and body. We will learn about a safe and effective drink, called master cleanse, to both purify the body, and lose weight.
I am here with the Juice Maestro, Keith Wahrer of the daily juice, and we are going to talk a little bit about the master cleanse. Hi Keith.
Keith: Hi.
Nicole: So briefly, what is a fast?
Keith: A fast is a period of time where someone will subject themselves where they stop eating food of any kind and consume only liquids.
Nicole: So that doesn’t necessarily mean just water. You can consume juices?
Keith: yes, you can do a juice fast, master cleanse is a popular juice fast.
Ivy Minnis: Well when I first started the master cleanse, it was a little difficult the first time. Because I was in the mindset of thinking I had to eat every meal and you know just carrying that mindset with me.
Bob Winters: Fasting for one day it really showed me how much that I thought about food. And how much food is a part of our lives.
Keith: The idea with the master cleanse is that your body is getting the bare minimum that It needs to survive for ten days. The benefits of fasting come from not eating. Because when you stop eating, your body naturally goes into a cycle of detoxification and cleansing.
Ivy Minnis: You know after the first couple of days it is sort of like you are in a different realm. It is like you are in a different mindset than everyone else. Like you see food around you but you don’t really want to eat it.
Bob Winters: A lot of times people fall victim to the diet that their diet controls them. Because the body becomes a habit to eat certain foods. During the master cleanse, during the 10 day fast. I drink a gallon of this a day, how much of this do I drink a day?
Keith: Yes, on average I would say a gallon a day is a good amount.
Nicole: Wow that is a lot of liquid.
Keith: It seems like a lot, it’s amazing though when you’re not eating it goes pretty quickly. You do want to be sure to have it with you at all times. Because you want to make sure to stay hydrated. And you burn those calories that are in the maple syrup pretty much immediately.
Bob Winters: On the master cleanse you can really do it as many days as you feel to do it. It is recommended to do ten days.
Nicole: I have heard of celebrities who have used this in order to lose weight for upcoming film roles. Do you recommend it for weight loss?
Keith: You probably will lose some weight, but you will probably gain it right back afterwards if you begin eating your regular diet. I recommend using the fats an s a way of rebooting and changing your diet from that point on, your diet can change.
Ivy Minnis: Whenever I did the master cleanse and I did fasting, I actually had more energy. I didn’t feel bad, so it was pretty good.
Nicole: It seems like if you’re going to make the commitment to go ten days without eating. That you probably have to be at a good place to restart your life in general.
Keith: It is an amazing thing when you fast; it brings an awareness of your diet. You become aware of what it is that you’re creating. So fasting is really good for learning about yourself.
Bob Winters: I have done the master cleanse several times. And I have done it with incorporating other elements in it. Spirulina, Himalayan crystal salt.
Nicole: And these are the ingredients for the master cleanse right here?
Keith: What we have, this is maple syrup. With the maple syrup we get the sugars that we need for our energy.
Nicole: We have grade b maple syrup. Lemon juice. How much lemon do we use?
For a gallon of water, we take out about 20oz of that water and then we are going to put in about 11oz of maple syrup, 8oz of lemon juice, and 1 tsp. cayenne pepper.
Nicole: alright before I go over the edge, I am going to see if I can actually stomach this. See what it taste like. That’s a big glass. You know, ooh that cayenne is really spicy. Right there at the very end, but it is actually pretty good. It is an interesting combination to put cayenne and maple syrup together.
Keith: It is kind of spicy lemonade.
Nicole: So I bet after ten days you really start to like this though.
Keith: like it or hate it.
Nicole: everyone kind of has their own.
Keith: Well you know you get tired of the same thing after ten days, but it is not so much about liking it. It is about doing it for your health.
Nicole: Well thank you so much for telling us about fasting.
Keith: My pleasure.
Nicole: It is a great way to purify the body but please consult your physician before you decide to begin one. I am Nicole Tomlinson and form all of us at Zen living, thank you so much for watching, and we will see you next time. Peace.
