Transcript: Asian Supermarket

Episode #3 “Asian Supermarkets” Nicole Tomlinson: You have seen them everywhere and just about every American city has one. But did you ever go inside? And if so how do you know really what you’re buying? What am I talking about? Asian supermarkets. Once you go inside it’s a completely different atmosphere. Different sites sounds and aromas. Let’s check it out. This is Lan and she is going to be showing us around today. Lan can you show us some tings that we might not typically find at a regular grocery store? Lan Ly: First item, lemon grass. It’s a spice that we can chop up and use in cooking. Or sometimes when your not feeling well you can boil this in a pot of water and use it like a sauna. This is gobo root. This is grown all over Japan and we have it here now. Usually we can make soup with this, make a stock with this. It’s great as a blood purifier, and for digestion. Nicole Tomlinson: It purifies the blood? So good for detoxing. Getting all those impurities out of your system. Lan Ly: Yes. Now this is bitter melon. This we can use in a soup or stir fry as well and this is great for lowering blood sugar as well. Nicole Tomlinson: Ok, it looks kind of like cucumber how does it taste. Lan Ly: It’s a bit bitter, there’s a trick to when you’re making soup, you can add soy bean. That will less the bitterness and also give you the benefits. This is awaeah, you can make soups or make it in a shake. And a lot of women use this through there third trimester. Nicole Tomlinson: Of pregnancy? Ok, and what does it do for them? Lan Ly: It helps them produce mucus and to speed up and ease delivery. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh so women who are preparing to give birth should defiantly add this to there diet. To make that a little easier, oh that’s great. Supermarket customer: I shop at an Asian supermarket, because I get a better choice of vegetables and Asian products at a better price than the regular supermarket. I but lots of dumplings, because I can keep these in the freezer and make those really fast. And lots of vegetables. Pea shoots, Chinese broccoli, snow peas, bean sprouts. I can buy them in bulk and lot fresher than I can at the supermarket I normally go to. Nicole Tomlinson: If you are a vegetarian than the Asian market is your best friend. Lan what can we eat that’s not tofu all the time? Lan Ly: this right here is a vege king prawn. And this is black pepper smoky meat. Nicole Tomlinson: Ok, what kind of meat does this taste like? Is it more like chicken? Lan Ly: More like fish. Nicole Tomlinson: More like fish, oh of, and how do you prepare this? Lan Ly: This could be put in to a stir fry as well. Nicole Tomlinson: Just grab some veggies toss it all in a pan and there you go, easy enough. Lan Ly: This right here, is a veggie hot pot. You can make hot pot with this. You can just make a broth and set it on your table, this with some sauce and veggies. And you’re ready to go. Nicole Tomlinson: Ok great so it’s a fast easy meal to make for the family. Are all these pretty inexpensive? What are we looking at spending here? Lan Ly: Yes they are, they range from about 2.99 to about 4.99. Nicole Tomlinson: Really 2.99 for this will feed probably two people. And 4.99 feed your whole family. That’s great. Were here in an isle that’s filled with a bunch of different herbs. Can you tell me a little bit about some special ones? Lan Ly: Yes, this one here is a mix of herbal items, this we can make into a soup as well. And usually the best way is with black chicken which we can cook as well with this. Slow cook overnight, and that draws all the nutrients out from this. And a lot of women after giving birth use this. Just to replenish there energy, and nutrients. This is a wolf berry, or goji berry. This as well we slow cook, and drink all the nutrients that come out, and this is very good for your eyesight. This is dried honey suckle. Sometimes when we are needing to cool down our bodies, we would slow cook this, and drink the juices form this. Supermarket Customer: I can’t find quiet a few things I want in any other store. Whole food suggested I stop here. Nicole Tomlinson: Lans put together some personal and helpful items to show us. This is a rice cooker, we just open it up like this, and we just add the rice. Nicole Tomlinson: Is this what you use to add the rice? How do you know how much water to add? Lan Ly: If you have say three cups of rice, you would add water up to the line that has the three. Nicole Tomlinson: Now do you cook only white rice, or any other different kind of rice? What can you sue? Lan Ly: You can also cook brown rice, or white rice as well. Nicole Tomlinson: Now what is this right here, this little contraption, looks a little scary. Lan Ly: This Is an ear wax remover. Nicole Tomlinson: And that? I don’t even know what that is. Is it some sort of office supply or something? Lan Ly: This is a tongue scraper. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh ok, so I just bend it like this and I… Green tea, that’s pretty simple, what is green tea really good for? Lan Ly: Well green tea has cholestrol lowering properties, and also anti cancer benefits. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh, ok, so it has antioxidants in it. Ok, good. And what is this green stuff>? Lan Ly: And this is eucalyptus oil. Nicole Tomlinson: Eucalyptus oil. Ok, and what does it do? Lan Ly: This is very mild to where you can put it on newborns and babies, and this will protect them from wind and all that. And protect them from catching colds too easily. Nicole Tomlinson: Oh ok I see so it’s a good preventative method for you if you have children. Tiger balm, what do we do with tiger balm? Lan Ly: Tiger balm, it’s very good for aches and pains. Headaches, you can apply that to the temples. Nicole Tomlinson: Right here and right here? Lan Ly: Yes, and great also for mosquito bites. Nicole Tomlinson: Now what is this Indian god lotion Lan? Let’s talk about this. Lan Ly: Well this is a sexual enhancement lotion for men, and you would just spread it directly on to the genitals to prolog erection. Nicole Tomlinson: Yeah, it says long play, that’s exciting. Thank you so much for showing us around your store today Lan I really appreciate that. It seems to be all of the time we have for today, but I guess we have taken some of the guesswork out of Asian supermarkets for you. From all of us here at Zen Living thanks for watching, I am Nicole, and Ill check you next time. Peace.
