I don't think there's anything wrong with the guests. They all bring their own personality into the mix. I think Sam is not very engaging and is a chef who'd rather be a musician.
Geeze... what do expect? EL-P to be a bunch of eager beavers, playing "whoop! there it is!" for all those folks that aren't into "that rap music"?
A lot of other main-stream underground groups (irony intended) would have simply sat in silence, chins up, chanting 'yeah yeah, you know what I'm sayin... ...its like I'm saying...".
EL-P acted like themselves, albeit, they looked like they may have partied pretty hard the night before.

Cooking and music have been known to intersect — during episodes of Dinner With the Band, for instance — and an Italian gentleman known as Don Pasta Selecter (not his real name) is taking things a step further.
The host is tattooed and goateed Sam Mason—“part rocker, part chef”—of
New York’s WD-50, who employs the musical fingers of touring bands for
help in making such exotic specialties as black olive cobbler and miso
butterscotch halibut (along with more staid creations, like steak and
frites and bagels and lox).
ON Networks has five
food and drink shows to choose from: Budget Health Nut, Cocktails on
the Fly, Dinner with the Band, Food Science and Stump the Chef.
