The Parent Code

There's a ton of parenting resources that provide great information on how to raise kids of all ages. The Parent Code takes conventional advice further, giving viewers interesting inside information - whether it's keeping you in the know about new findings in the field of child development, advice on communicating with young ones, or giving you a heads up on how to handle a teen gamer in the house. The Parent Code is here to help because unfortunately, kids don't come with instructions.

Episode “Fitness”

Baker Harrell: Fun is critical; fun is everything, if it is not fun kids won’t do it. No one will do it even as adults, if we’re not having fun ultimately we’re not going to keep doing it.
Announcer: Wouldn’t it be great if our kids came with an instruction manual? Well now you have the parent code.
Tanya Karr: So how do you do it? Well believe it or not the solution your family’s fitness can actually start with your kids.
Melissa Salazar hears her seven year old daughter Sophia loud and clear.
Melissa Salazar: You know, you’re not supposed to eat that lets make ourselves something, led daddy eat that if he wants to eat it.
Tanya Karr: Sofia joins her friends after school for youth interactive; it is where they live in that play time and good food fuel the body for the mind.
Baker Harrell: Kids respond better through empowerment, through fun, through inspiration, their motivation.
Tanya Karr: Baker Harrell founder of youth interactive takes that motivation to schools, churches, and even corporations, he says he loves to keep parents on their toes.
Baker Harrell: I asked them to raise their hands if they made sure that the kids brush their teeth that morning and then that evening, and then I ask them to keep their hands up if they at made sure their kids had five fruits and vegetables, and if they made sure that their kids had 60 minutes of physical activity that day, and hands come down to enhance come down.
Tanya Karr: Baker says kids can be changed agents for the whole family’s lifestyle.
Baker Harrell: We want the kids to go home and talk to their parents about why it is important to them and what they need to eat and what they want to do as a family and how they want to play. It is a much more powerful message coming from a kid in from a billboard or a television set.
Tanya Karr: These kids take home wristbands with different daily messages and activities to do with their family.
Melissa Salazar: She comes home with these wristbands with different exercises, sometimes little recipes that they send her and I like it, it helps a lot.
Tanya Karr: For the rest of us Baker says we can try three simple life changes; one designate one day a week is family play day, just choose an activity that anyone can do. Two simply cut back on processed foods like chips and junk and three make time for dinner.
So the bottom line is put your family’s health first and listen to your kids and let them help you make the small changes to eat right and get moving together. That is it for today’s Parent Code we will see you next time.

<media:text type="html">The Parent Code
Episode “The Five Second Rule”

Announcer: Wouldn’t it be great if our kids came with an instruction manual? Well now you have the parent code.
Parent: It depends where you do it also, if you do it at your home that is okay.
Parent: I do it in public too.
Ari Brown: There is a chance that it is going to pick up germs, and less than five seconds.
Announcer: In today's episode if you drop it, should you eat it? The parent code on the unhealthy truth, of the five second rule.
Tanya Karr: Hello I am Tanya Karr, host of the parent code. Have you ever had a great piece of food and dropped it on the ground and yelled quick five second rule. And then put it in your mouth? What about when you're with your kids? Come on admit it we've all done it.
Parent: My mom used to say, in Spanish pick it up before the devil likes it.
Parent: Five second rule, I have gone more than five seconds.
Tanya Karr: You know there is a high school senior who actually put this old wives tale to the test they few years ago? And she won a Nobel Prize for her research. What she found was pretty surprising. The research showed 70% of women and 56% of men are familiar with that five second rule. And women are more likely than men to eat the food off the ground. And get this; cookies and candy are much more likely to be eaten than things like broccoli and cauliflower. We really cherish our junk food.
So eating a dropped Cheeto off the floor is one thing, but how about even a dropped pacifier. Come on we have all done that. How safe is it? It turns out it is not safe. In fact the teenage Nobel Prize winner proved that if you drop your food on any surface that contains harmful bacteria your food can become contaminated in less than five seconds.
Ari Brown: Well you are taking a risk that you or your child are going to pick up some germs that has been living on the floor. And germs do live on surfaces, including the floors. Some of them last for hours; some of them last for weeks. Is that French fry really worth it? That would be the question I would really ask.
Tanya Karr: And that harmful bacterium can make you and your family very sick.
Ari Brown: Food poisoning basically presents with vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and diarrhea, usually with blood in the stool.
Tanya Karr: Those symptoms can last anywhere from six to 72 hours. But don't waste any time, especially with your kids. You need to call your doctor immediately. These days’ parents have all kinds of help from hand sanitizers to gadgets galore. Check this out a self-closing pacifier, it has got built in wings that really close like doors the moment it hits the ground.
So all this talk really takes the fun out of a silly game like the five second rule, next time you find a piece of food on the ground and you want to put it in anyone's mouth stop, think about the consequences. Remember all these grubby hands on the playground; hand sanitizer really goes a long way to keep you and your family healthy. That is it for the parent code I am Tanya Karr, we will see you next time.

Episode “Cheap is chic”

Announcer: Wouldn’t it be great if our kids came with an instruction manual? Well now you have the parent code.
Parent: You can buy a stack of clothing to outfit your child for the season, for less than $200, easily.
Announcer: In today’s episode, how do you keep your kids in style at a fraction of the cost? The parent code, on saving time and money with children’s resale.

Tanya Karr: Hello I am Tanya Karr host of the parent code. You know when it comes to buying clothes are you a penny pincher? Or are you like me and you just cross your fingers for a really great sale. Well I tell you what, these days cheap is chic. In fact resale shops all the rage. They can be a lot of fun to dress your family like a million bucks on a shoestring budget. Just look at this place, this is no retail store it is children's resale a money saver's dream come true.
Dad: Trade in our old stuff and pick up new stuff to them. So it works, and we just keep doing it.
Tanya Karr: Now anyone is invited to bring in their kids gently used clothes, as long as they are clean and fashionable. They will inspect them, and they will give some back.
Minda Walthal: We look for gently used clothing that has been purchased at a major store within the last three years.
Tanya Karr: It is not consignment anymore?
Minda Walthal: No, it actually has changed quite a bit. It actually has changed better for the consumer, because they actually get it cash outright, which means that they do not have to wait those 30 days to get their money. And most of the stores nowadays are going towards that because it gets more products in the door, for somebody to be able to sell their items right then and there and not have to wait for those 30 days.
Tanya Karr: In most stores split those profits, offering you anywhere from between 30 and 50% of your items sale price. You can keep the cash or use your store credit to shop. And shopping is really the fun part, baby clothes are really a steal, and the sizes and styles usually go up to about preteen.
Minda Walthal: That fashion is the more worn it looks the better it is, so sometimes we even have the battle out which side is it. Is it she that looks to warn even for us, or is it fashion.
Tanya Karr: Now once in awhile you'll even find brand-new outfits with the original retail tag still on them, not to mention special occasion dresses, uniforms, costumes, and so much more, shoes, toys, baby gear, and even furniture, just about everything to keep your kids in style.
Mom: Fabulous things, really nice clothes, shoes, lots of great toys.
Tanya Karr: Remember most children's resale shot to donate in their unused items to charity, so shop until you drop because everyone wins when you support your local resale shop. Plus saving time and money, well that is one of the Golden rules of the parent code. We will see you next time.

<media:text type="html">The Parent Code
Episode “Signing with your baby”

Announcer: Wouldn’t it be great if our kids came with an instruction manual? Well now you have the parent code.
Parent: If you compare a three-year-old signer, they have the language skills of a four-year-old so they are a year advanced in their speech.
Announcer: In today's episode is there a better way to communicate before your baby learns to talk? The parent code, on babies using sign language.
Tanya Karr: Hello I am Tanya Karr host of the parent code. You know babies can be a lot of fun, especially when they are in a good mood like my friend Grace right here. But boy can they turn on a dime when they get frustrated.
As a parent you wish that you could read your baby's mind, just figure out what is bothering him. Because you know, and he knows the answer is probably pretty simple.
Carrie Flener: My husband and I started experimenting with it when Grace was about six months old and did it for about two months and I was just starting to get frustrated with it and thinking that she was not going to pick up on it. And then she started clapping for more. Instead of throwing little temper tantrums she is able to tell us when she is sleepy or she is hungry.
Tanya Karr: At 16 months old Grace is telling her exactly what is on her mind, long before she other her first word Grace has been communicating with American Sign Language. And ASL is working for all of these kids. From infants to preschoolers, ASL can open up a whole new world. And that is the concept behind signing classes just like this one. Birgit started signing with her son.
Birgit: So when Marvin was half a year old we started signing with him, the basics, the more, the milk the eat signs. And then I started again with my daughter and Marvin consigned to her as well and I told him well it can be your secret language with your little sister. So we were teaching her all of the things.
Tanya Karr: Now you can find all sorts’ types of support materials just like this sign to me card, with more than 50 basic signs for your kids. But experts say start with just three. More, milk, and eat. And while starting at eight months is the norm well the older your child the faster they will learn. These preschoolers are is a huge help to teaching eight-month old Macs who is still not showing signs of cooperating.
Birgit: There are lots of programs out there on TV I have seen, so you should just continue and it is really fun for them.
Tanya Karr: So how do you started? Well check out the Internet in search for baby sign language in your city. You'll find instructors and free support groups nationwide.
Now some critics will tell you that babies that sign will have delayed speech skills. While that is just not true, in fact a new study shows that preschoolers, who sign just like Marvin here, will actually expand their vocabulary. Right Marvin what you think of that? So it kind of proves you're never too old or too young to learn to sign. How do you say bye? Bye, that's it for the parent code we will see you next time.

Episode “Video Game Violence”

Announcer: Wouldn’t it be great if our kids came with an instruction manual? Well now you have the parent code.
Boy: I get chainsaws and cut people in half.
Off camera voice: What’s the fun in that come on?
Girl: I think its fun I just don’t; I am not crazy about it.
Boy: It’s not a big deal it’s just something to do with friends.
Announcer: In today’s episode are violent video games turning our teens into criminals? The parent code, on whether its time for parents to pull the plug.
Tanya Karr: Hello I am Tanya Karr, host of the parent code. If you are the parent of a teenager who plays video games, well you are not alone. But do you ever worry that these days these games are getting a lot more realistic and a whole lot more violent?
Boy: Uh, I play off and on, not a lot but I play quite a few. Its fun you know, like hanging out with friends it is very fun to just blow up people.
Girl: Usually I don’t even hear them talk about video games at all.
Boy: I get more agitated in sports, playing sports and losing is much worse. I think this is just having fun, making fun of friends and just hanging out.
Boy: Like all my friends play it, we don’t do anything stupid.
Announcer: For a lot of teenagers playing video games is really a social activity. They compare scores and they just have fun together. But researchers in Massachusetts recently studied seventh and eighth graders playing video games just like this day in and day out. The study confirmed that most teens were already playing those M rated games. Remember M stands for mature content, the more violent games. T stands for teen which is still not appropriate for school aged kids. And then there is E for everyone.
Boy: Really I think it is more for parents because kids they just want to have fun, but I guess parents they want to just make sure I guess their kids aren’t seeing anything they shouldn’t see I guess.
Boy: I think maybe sometimes it is a waste of time you know. Staying inside but I do it usually at night, so I cant do anything else.
Girl: Yeah, I know what the ratings are like E for everyone and mature. It’s good so parents can see which ones are more violent than others.
Announcer: And that Massachusetts study also discovered a couple of more interesting facts. Most kids are not playing those violent video games alone.
Boy: Its better with friends their funs, to hang out with them, relax and play some games.
Boy: It is just fun to talk with them about something and hang out.
Announcer: Researchers also said as a whole, most of the kid thy studied seemed to deal with their emotion like stress and anger a little bit better after playing those M rated video games. So they take home messages are plenty simple, one don’t worry, these violent vide games probably wont turn your teen to crime.
Also be aware, keep these game consoles out of the bedroom and out in the open so you can watch the action. Speaking of action, get into it with your kids, you can play these games. Mom and dad can still dominate right guys? High score! Alright that’s it for the parent code. We will see you next time.

Episode “Teeth Sealants”

Dr. Paul Gates: When you see a very young child who has very severe decay in permanent teeth, may even need a root canal or a crown in a permanent tooth, at six or seven years old it really is gut wrenching...
Announcer: Wouldn’t it be great if our kids came with an instruction manual? Well now you have the parent code.
Tanya Karr: A well balanced meal for kids anyway is something ooey and gooey and then sugary sweet to wash it all down. Hi, I am Tanya Karr host of the parent code. These days it is really tough to keep our kids teeth cavity free, but what if I told you there is a surefire guaranteed way to keep them cavity free, it is healthy for kids and cost effective for parents.
Just getting your kids to the dentist is in and of itself an accomplishment, according to the centers of disease control the earlier the better. They have recently announced that tooth decay amongst preschoolers is on the rise. And that CDC report blames sugar filled sippy cups and kids not seeing a dentist at an early age. Specialist like Dr. Paul Gates says he has seen it too.
Dr. Paul Gates: These kids don’t even realize they have the permanent teeth in there, the parents don’t realize it and serious decay can occur before they can even get to the dentist to check it out.
Tanya Karr: But the CDC report also revealed some good news, tooth decay among older kids has declined, and the report said that is because more kids are getting their teeth sealed.
Dr. Paul Gates: The sealants are a coating that go over the chewing surface of a tooth, and those chewing surface pack with food and their full of crevices and things that even a tooth brush bristles cant get too to clean out.
Tanya Karr: Dr Gates says sealants are usually painted on kid’s permanent molars, the first four, and around age six and seven, and the other molars at around age twelve. Now while most sealants last about ten years on average, Dr. Gates said they are not an absolute guarantee.
Dr. Paul Gates: It does depend on the patient, some sealants don’t last very long because of chewing hard candies, some patients chew rocks or grind their teeth, and those do have to be replaced every so often.
Tanya Karr: And that is usually an out of pocket expense for parents.
Dr. Paul Gates: Insurance companies are not as big on prevention at all; they are typically on the repair.
Tanya Karr: Now, the cost for sealants is about twenty five dollars per tooth and when you consider that the filling is twice that amount, that is a good investment for your kid’s health, plus it leaves a few dollars behind for the tooth fairy, and that is always a good thing. Hey that’s it for today’s The Parent Code; I will see you next time.
